    I discovered adaptation classes when I was chairing a school film jury, a few years ago. There was something fascinating about those classes. It was a patchwork of so many nationalities and personal paths, yet sharing a common goal: to learn French and try to fit in a place they don’t belong. “A place they don’t belong”: this was the idea that struck me the most.What interests me is their enthusiasm, and this class which seems to be like a concrete utopia where, despite of looming difficulties, everything remains possible. They’re aware that their lot in life is different from the French-born pupils’ they sometimes share classes with. And yet, they are driven by exemplary strength, hope and courage.     Fatima lives on her own with two daughters to support: 15-year-old Souad, a teenager in revolt, and 18-year old Nesrine, who is starting medical school. Fatima speaks French poorly and is constantly frustrated by her daily interactions with her daughters. Her pride and joy, they are also a source of worry. To ensure the best possible future for them, she works odd hours as a cleaning woman. One day, she takes a fall on the stairs.     My grand-parents didn’t speak French, and neither did my mother when she was a child. They were “the invisible ones” in the society they lived in. Some of Fatima’s manners remind me of them. She is like those women, only partly schooled, who had to emigrate out of vital necessity, to come and live in a country whose language and codes were completely unknown to them. In France, they gave birth to children and raised them, even though sometimes they were kept apart by the language or by different customs and points of reference. For all these reasons, regardless of the things they didn’t know or master, these women have developed major resources, drawn from fierce courage and obstinacy. 我的外祖父母都不讲法语,我的妈妈小时候也不曾讲过。他们属于社会中的“透明人”。法蒂玛的一些行为举止让我想起了他们。她就像那些只接受过不完整教育的女人们,为了生存不得不移民到一个语言习俗对她们来讲完全陌生的国家里去。在法国,她们生儿育女,哪怕有时会被不同的语言和文化隔离开来。因为所有这些缘故,这些女性并不依赖于她们无法掌握的东西,而是凭借坚韧和勇敢发展成为主要的力量源。

    Samuele is 12 years old and lives on an island in the middle of the sea. He goes to school, loves shooting his slingshot and going hunting. He likes land games, even though everything around him speaks of the sea and the men, women and children who try to cross it to get to his island. But his is not an island like the others, its name is Lampedusa and it is the most symbolic border of Europe, crossed by thousands of migrants in the last 20 years in search of freedom.     I went to Lampedusa for the first time in the fall of 2014 to explore the idea of shooting a 10-minute film。Once on the island, however, I discovered a reality that was far removed from that found in the media and the political narrative, and I realized that it would be impossible to compress a universe as complex as Lampedusa into just a few minutes. After setting up production for the project, I moved to Lampedusa and rented a little house in the old port where I stayed until the last moment I needed it. I wanted to tell the story of this tragedy through the eyes of the islanders, whose way of seeing and hearing things, and living, had undergone a massive change over the past 20 years. 我第一次去兰佩杜萨是为了为一个10分钟左右的短片寻找灵感,那是2014年的秋天,但是当我登上那个岛屿时,我意识到这个岛屿和平时我在政治家演讲和媒体上看到的完全不同,我根本不可能用短短十分钟来讲述这个像宇宙一样复杂的岛屿。在组建起我的拍摄团队后,我在码头边上租了一个小房间,并在那里呆到了在岛上的最后一秒。在这二十年里,居民们看待问题的方式和生活的方式都发生了剧变,我想要通过岛民的眼睛来讲述他们这二十年来在这里目睹的悲剧。

    Jacques Audiard is a French film director and screenwriter; the son of Michel Audiard, also a notable screenwriter and film director. He has won both the César Award for Best Film and the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language twice, in 2005 for The Beat That My Heart Skipped and in 2010 for A Prophet, as well as winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. His film Rust and Bone competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.     Joost van Ginkel (1971, The Netherlands) produced his first short film SAND (2008) by himself. SAND was selected for the 2008 Venice Film Festival, won 13 international awards and was the Dutch submission for the Academy Award Best Live Action Short. His second short film KISS (2009) was selected for the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival. His first feature film, 170 HZ, was nominated for Best Actress and Best Sound Design and won the Youth Movie Squad Award and the Public's Choice Award at the 2011 Netherlands Film Festival. 170 HZ was also selected for the 2011 Busan International Film Festival.
